Commerce Talks EP 11: Christopher Rossini – Avalara

Commerce Talks EP 11: Christopher Rossini – Avalara

Guest Bio

Christopher Rossini | Director of Sales, Avalara

The Teamwork Commerce platform is built on a natively integrated framework; this strong foundation enables Teamwork Commerce to provide efficient omnichannel functionality to retailers across many industries. With a strong cloud backend, retailers are able to connect a variety of legacy systems, tools and integrations to drive more engaging retail experiences.

One of our integration partners is Avalara, a tax compliance software-based, cloud-based app. Data is sent through an API and allows Avalara to evaluate what is on the order in real time and make the appropriate tax calculations. Avalara captures and houses all the data and can also help companies with filing and remitting sales tax returns.

Chris Rossini, Director of Sales at Avalara joins us to discuss tax related issues for retailers.

Overview

One important topic affecting retailers took place June 21, 2018. The US Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision in South Dakota vs. Wayfair that states can require out-of-state sellers to collect and remit sales tax on sales to in-state consumers even if the seller has no physical presence in consumer’s state. The decision allows each state to define a sales threshold (dollar amount or number of transactions) which will trigger this collection requirement. Before Wayfair, businesses with no physical presence in a state were not considered to have sales tax “nexus” and no requirement to collect and remit tax on these sales.

Marketplace facilitator laws impose an obligation on the marketplace facilitator to collect and remit sales tax on behalf of marketplace sellers. These laws are significant because they shift the obligation to collect and remit sales tax from the seller to the platform that facilitates the sale (the marketplace facilitator).

International tax topics include tariffs, HS Code classifications, registration requirements and value added tax. Tax education is important for retailers. For additional free tax related resources, please go to www.avalara.com

Scott Cahill  | Director of EU Sales at Teamwork Commerce

The Teamwork Commerce platform is built on a natively integrated framework, this strong foundation enables Teamwork Commerce to provide efficient omnichannel experiences to retailers across industries. With the strong cloud backend, retailers are able to connect a variety of legacy systems, tools and integrations to drive more engaging retail experiences through multiple channels.

What are the current emerging technologies trends and challenges of the retail landscape in Europe? Why is Ireland an ideal location for business development? Scott Cahill, Director of EU Sales at Teamwork Commerce (based in Dublin) joins us to discuss. Scott has been part of the Teamwork Commerce family for 16 months, cultivating a wide array of sales and partner relationships to drive long term success for the company.

Overview

Working on digital technologies and e-commerce platforms are the new omnichannel strategies for the US (Uber, Amazon, AirBnB) but in Europe they are experiencing high growth as this access becomes part of everyday life via social media such as Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. While consumers expect to have all the power, retailers are learning how to be interesting on multiple channels and how to improve customer experiences in the physical store and on social media.

Sustainability is a hot topic, as well as clarifying a retailer’s brand image and narrowing of product offering. Clienteling is a trend and an opportunity, especially in the luxury segment. The closing of brick and mortar stores and depending on digital strategies is a reality for some retailers due to the pandemic. COVID-19 measures like traffic counters are a trend that may not go away, and might actually create a more enjoyable customer experience for some shoppers.

Why Ireland for businesses? The corporate tax is very competitive. After Brexit is complete, Ireland will be the only place in the world where its citizens can work in UK and in Europe without a visa. The geographic location is ideal for US and European companies. They welcome all countries and companies for the boost to their economy.

Alex Goodwin | (Former) Digital Marketing Manager at Teamwork Commerce

The Teamwork Commerce platform is built on a natively integrated framework, this strong foundation enables Teamwork Commerce to provide efficient omnichannel functionality to retailers across industries, with the strong cloud backend, retailers are able to connect a variety of legacy systems, tools and integrations to drive more engaging retail experiences.

What is Teamwork Cares? Alex Goodwin, (Former) Digital Marketing Manager at Teamwork Commerce joins us to discuss. Alex was a part of the Teamwork Commerce family for one year and was a member of the Teamwork Cares committee.

Overview

The Teamwork Cares volunteer initiative stemmed from a June 19, 2020 staff meeting. CEO Michael Mauerer decided to use this meeting as a forum for employees to openly discuss the racial injustice and social inequality happening in the world at that moment, as well as frustration with the second wave of COVID-19. June 19 the was actually an important date to have this meeting, as this is a significant date in US history, commemorating the emancipation of African-American slaves. Teamwork Cares has three pillars of initiatives: 1) community action and local events, 2) educational mentorship for students and 3) adult mentorship. Some local events that Teamwork has participated in include Feeding America/Feeding Tampa Bay, a virtual 5K that raised money for the United Negro Fund and My Stuff back to school drive filling up backpacks for needy school kids. Lunch Pals is a mentor/mentee program that pairs a Teamwork employee with a young student. Adult mentorship includes helping others with business, entrepreneurial and life skills.

A by-product of each of these initiatives has been creating community within Teamwork itself; and by raising awareness of significant issues and the struggles of others, we are bridging the gap on difficult conversations and creating a safe place to have these discussions.

Amber Hovious | VP of Partnerships & Marketing

The TeamworkCommerce platform is built on a natively integrated framework, this strong foundation enables Teamwork Commerce to provide efficient omnichannel functionality to retailers across industries, with the strong cloud backend, retailers are able to connect a variety of legacy systems, tools and integrations to drive more engaging retail experiences. But what are the challenges of creating this kind of ecosystem? Amber Hovious, VP of marketing & Partnerships at Teamwork Commerce joins us to discuss. Amber has been part of the Teamwork Commerce family for 7 years, building out the marketing strategy, business growth and approach as well as cultivating a wide array of partnership relationships to drive long term success.

Overview

Unified commerce is everything right now as technology has grown and especially with the challenges of Covid-19 and the limitations that result from this in a retail operation perspective. It is more important than ever that there’s flexibility within the retail environment and the different systems working together so unified commerce when done successfully can remove friction and effectively empower seamless retail experiences.

I think one of the unique things that sets teamwork apart is our partnerships.

It’s our relationships, our ability to talk to our partners to get on the phone with them to help troubleshoot together. It’s hard to troubleshoot problems in individual silos, without reconciling the connected pieces. When they are connected it is much quicker to solve those issues. We can troubleshoot together we can plan ways to make even more effective integrations together.

One of the most important things is identifying partners that will be valuable in the long term & a good partner for our clients is their roadmap, what have they got planned and where is their business going, if the system is built around an established architecture we can effectively grow the combined solution to provide more value in the long term and avoid common retail technology challenges that arise from siloed retail.

Guest Bio

Tori Beal | Human Resources Manager

Tori has been a part of the Teamwork Commerce team for a little while, and as a result has a complete understanding of the culture, values and ethos at the core of the Teamwork brand. Through her role she has been essential at establishing a collective company culture that supersedes borders!

Overview

Teamwork Is The Core Value

Tori joined Teamwork because she saw the value of a collective group striving to bring positive change to the retail industry as well as the culture of positivity and collaboration.

“I don’t think at Teamwork you have to check a part of yourself at the door, you can be your full self & embrace your uniqueness.”

Diversity helps you to go beyond yourself, an environment where you can feel welcome and able to experience a variety of different things is so meaningful.

“Our differences, our cultures, that collective & when we all come together is what helps to make Teamwork so dynamic.”

When we celebrate our differences and our uniqueness that enhances the work environment and the experience for every staff member.

When we bring our full self to the table we get the most out of our teams and drive a more cohesive work environment in which everyone can thrive.

Teamwork Is Global

New staff have to be adaptable, we are always improving, striving towards the next goal or development, new staff have to be adaptable and open to growing, pivoting and innovating to drive overall growth.

Positivity is key, staff have to believe in being a part of a team and bring energy to the workplace, company and culture. New staff need to jump in and be engaged, eager to grow and be part of something that is bigger than themselves.
